The shortest day, the darkest night, Hobart comes to life, shrugs off the cold and celebrates the Winter Solstice by painting the town red. Welcome to Dark MoFo.

Winter solstice in Hobart is at 7:13 pm on Tuesday, June 21, 2022. In terms of daylight, this day is 6 hours, 20 minutes shorter than the December (Summer) solstice.

We beat the crowds, wandering around the wharf the night before opening, a lovely evening. Images taken with … the Pen-F – almost unedited jpegs, this camera just keeps surprising me!

Dark Mofo really brings the city to life, giving people a reason to come and celebrate the dark. Every hotel room is booked out this year, mostly with mainland visitors, a real boost to the local economy.

But, the fun is not over yet, Festival of Voices will be 17 years old in 2022… running from June 29 – July 12. The first Tasmanian winter Festival, designed specifically to embrace the unique experience of winter and bring light and enjoyment to the people of Hobart in what was traditionally a cold and quiet season. Come down and join us!

I hope you enjoyed our little red wander, thanks for visiting, greetings from Tasmania 😀
Wow! These are amazing! Happy Winter Solstice to you and your family! 🙂

Thank you Anneli, red often messes with image sensors causing weird flares and orange colour. I find it best to under expose a little 😀

I haven’t figured all that out yet. Way too advanced for me, but you do a good job of it.

Wow, this is fabulous. I’ve not heard of this winter festival before. My first thought was “Everyone should do this, all over the world.” But then I thought, “No, everyone should visit Tassie for this festival!”

It’s really bought the city and to life and a much needed lift to our economy at a time when everyone would usually stay at home to keep warm. Nothing like a good party to warm up 🙂

Thanks Anita, intended to go again Saturday night when things were open, but it had been a long day and got comfortable in front of a fire. 😀

Lovely shades of red! Well, I guess that’s one way of celebrating winter … and it did feel a bit warmer here in chilly SA after looking at your amazing pictures!
