Breakfast Buddies

My back yard – Before.

Now prioritising my tasks by what brings me the most joy, so I took the rather tall and ordinary corrugated iron back fence down late last week and replaced it with a chicken-wire fence, to open up my little yard to the wonders beyond. What a difference! More sunlight, a lovely private view to open space, and more wildlife!

I’ve enjoyed breakfast outside since I did it as my back yard no longer feels like a prison yard, and I have started putting in a garden on Sunday, yet to be planted out. I was thinking local native plants and something to climb on the fence, but today thought of protea’s and Leucadendron’s for lovely flowers, great colour, not too big, fairly hardy and low watering! I will paint the fence too, likely a matt green to blend in even better.

The following photos were all taken on the second morning breakfast within half an hour! The variety of bird-life is quite amazing, these aren’t the only species of birds I have seen here.

I’ve also seen at least four different frogs! This one was on my watering can.

What a wonderful way to start the day with all the birds around.

    1. Thanks Joy,
      A little retail therapy after work – and you are the first to know … I purchased 14 plants for the area! I will put them in tomorrow weather permitting. I decided on a variety of drought tolerant Australian natives that will have lovely colourful flowers full of nectar most of the year, for the birds and insects to feast on. I picked smaller growing plants – up to a meter or so, so as not to block that glorious outlook! I’ll post a reveal later, but for now, it’s just between you and me 😉

      While some of the birds here are the same as under the mountain, there are many more new species in this area. I noticed different small ones flitting about in the bushes around the dunes and other types along the beach. Even the river mouth has different ones again – waders and pelicans, and many sea birds fly overhead. Maybe I got lucky this morning, normally I find photographing birds can be rather time consuming. I certainly have plenty of subject matter to look forward to capturing and sharing 😀

      it’s a wonderful place for bird watching. There’s quite a few diverse habitats fairly close by that offer different bird species – beach, dunes, river-mouth, lagoon and the area behind my house. A little further, there’s a bushland reserve I’ve yet to explore, with … platypus! I’m also hoping for fungi and orchids there too 😀

    1. Thanks Morgaine, I went plant shopping this evening after work! I chose a variety of colourful Australian plants with nectar filled flowers for the birds and insects. Nothing too big though, I don’t want to block too much of that view, but it will be much better than that old fence! I want to put in a bird bath too – and a bath for me 😀
