It’s been a while, I’ve been on holidays!
Last night there was an Aurora so I headed along the road to the best spot in the valley to view the Southern skies.
I had the 12-40mm F2.8 Olympus lens strapped on to the OM1 above, but quickly realised I needed a wider lens. Lucky I took along the Laowa C-Dreamer 7.5mm F2.0 lens – which is manual focus, so the first shot below when the “picket fence” beams appeared wasn’t quite sharp before I dialled it in.
The beams were visible to the naked eye as I watched them dance overhead for a few minutes. They were quite high in the night sky.
They disappeared and it settled for a while before the lower sky lit up again with some lovely colour on camera.
It then settled again and I headed home around 11pm as it was cold.

The easiest way to find out when it happens near you is to join one of the Aurora Alert groups of Facebook. There are some phone apps too 🙂 The hardest part is going out into the dark and cold 😉

Wonderful photos. We had our northern lights a few days before – amazing to think they’re happening in a different hemisphere! Wish I was a photographer!

Photography simply requires practice, not expensive gear. Observing light, different and interesting viewpoints, angles from the light source and learning from your own photos by being your own critic. Digital is much easier and cheaper than film was and offers instant feedback. Take heaps of photos with your phone, you can always delete the bad ones. Buy second hand gear instead of new, you learn more by being limited by your gear. Bounce off a friend who is also interested. Use YouTube to learn. Photography is a great hobby. Wish no more … be. 😀
