Street Photography

More random street photos from the “unpublished” folder, around Hobart … with people! You may have noticed I rarely take photos of people, especially random strangers. I’m scared they’ll bite 😉

I think he spotted me and was ready to bite, but I was looking at his lovely collection of gear!

You might notice I generally have an aversion to blown out highlights in my images, it’s something I’ve nearly always done. I like to preserve detail and tend to under-expose my shots deliberately by a stop – which is the opposite of what many photographers suggest – and adjust final levels after any editing.

Sometimes I dodge and burn (darken or lighten) selected areas if required. Though this is done digitally, it is a technique used in the darkroom of old, Ansell Adams was very good at it.

Thanks for visiting, and if you’re in one of my photos, thank you 😀

      1. Got it…I have an “old” Sony DSC F828 with a body that swivels 90 degrees from the lens. It is useful for candid shots. Lately, I mostly need it for a 10 year old granddaughter who always makes faces when being photographed.

      2. I had a Sony RX100 III before diving into Olympus. It was a great steath camera for atreet shooting! Almost went Sony full frame but I wanted to keep it small and light which is why I picked Olympus in the end, still sometimes wonder “what if”, but no regrets, it’s a great system that suits my needs.

      1. As soon as you said ‘weathersealed’ I knew you had the other version. I filled my mid range focal length needs with hat I believe is an R ? At the time of purchase I had no idea what I was getting. The cost…. US $59.00 used. A review I had seen boiled it down to if you could get it for under $100 it’s a good buy. For what I paid, and the images out in the swamps I’ve gotten I’m already ahead 😂. Plastic will break out there, but I spent what might be joking like a McDonalds Happy Meal 🤣.

      2. You got a bargain!! I have the Mark II. It’s hard to understand why people sell them. I’m careful with my gear but not precious about it. It gets exposed to the elements and plenty of opportunities for damage. One of the reasons I picked Olympus, it’s just built tough!

  1. I wondered the same thing as Michael. I’m sure some people don’t want to be photographed. I think the images are great – especially catching the natural expressions – but you never know what’s going on in people’s lives and how much they cherish their privacy. Be careful you don’t accidentally photograph someone who has just broken the law (or just wants to stay incognito) and is going to harass you for taking their picture. Having said all that, I really don’t like posed photos where people put on fake smiles. These candid shots are much more interesting.

    1. I don’t like posed shots either but I probably should ask permission after and show them the pic. In Australia you can take anyone’s picture in public without permission .. otherwise I couldn’t be on no less than 11 video surveillance cameras standing in one spot at Salamanca!!!
